Neuropsychological Assessment

A neuropsychologist is a psychologist with expertise in the relationship between the brain and behaviour. They work with people who have changes in their brain which leads them to have difficult with memory, attention, language, vision, problem solving and organisation. These difficulties can affect a person’s ability to perform their job or manage their day to day tasks.

A neuropsychology assessment uses a series of tasks to measure a person’s thinking and memory. Their performance can be compared to other people of the same age and background. The pattern of performance across these tasks can provide information about that person’s brain and how well they perform tasks in everyday life.

What questions can be answered by a Full Neuropsychological Assessment?

  • I’m worried about my memory and thinking, what might be causing my difficulties?

  • How are thinking and memory difficulties going to affect my work or study? What strategies can I use to help me?

  • How has my memory and thinking changed after I was diagnosed with dementia or a stroke? What can I do to help maximise my strengths?

  • I need to make complicated decisions about accommodation, financial or medical treatment issues.  How do I know if changes to my memory and thinking have affected my ability to make these decisions?

  • I don’t think my NDIS plan captures my support needs. What are my cognitive strengths and weaknesses and how can my supports help me in everyday life?

How much does a Full Neuropsychological Assessment cost?

A neuropsychological assessment is a detailed examination of all aspects of cognitive functioning. A comprehensive assessment takes around four to six hours, and then more time is spent by the neuropsychologist on scoring and interpretation of the results. We then provide a follow up feedback session to let you know how you have done and provide a detailed medical report about the assessment results and conclusions (8+ pages).

If the results of the assessment are to be used for legal purposes (i.e. in a court case) or for a QCAT tribunal for decision making capacity, please let me know and we can discuss a quote. These assessments take considerably more time and the costs may increase.

If you have an NDIS plan, you are self or plan managed, and you have a cognitive or intellectual disability, a neuropsychological assessment can generally be funded to provide information about your support needs. We can also provide assessments under WorkCover and other insurance funding agencies.

Please contact us to find out more information about our assessments. Let us know the person’s age and any funding sources.
